The Museum was established in 1987 in the rebuilt 16th century Old Arsenal of the Lower Castle of Vilnius. In the middle of the 16th century Vilnius Arsenal was an enormous building reputed to be the largest in the Polish-Lithuanian State. It was built over the wooden buildings of the 12th-14th century, pavements and part of the old wall of the Lower Castle. The surviving fragments of the early cultural layers of Vilnius can be seen in the exhibition arranged in the basement of the Arsenal.
